Measles Information
SUMMARY
-
Measles is eliminated in Canada but cases can occur from international travel by unvaccinated individuals.
-
Global measles surge and lower vaccination rates in Canada increase the risk of imported cases.
-
Spring Break travel heightens the risk of measles transmission, especially among unvaccinated children.
-
Two doses of measles vaccine are strongly recommended, ideally two weeks before international travel.
Why should your child get the MMR vaccine?
Protect your child's brain development.
Measles, mumps, and rubella can cause deafness, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), and meningitis.
Protect your child’s lungs.
Measles can cause pneumonia
and respiratory failure in severe cases.
Protect your child’s future fertility.
Mumps can cause subfertility and infertility and rubella can cause severe birth defects if caught during pregnancy.
I'll be travelling internationally, what do I need to know?
Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected when they travel internationally.
A level 1 (practise health precautions) travel health notice for measles is currently in place for all countries. It provides recommendations to people in Canada on how to protect themselves from measles when travelling, including making sure that their routine vaccinations, including measles, are up to date.
